Ligament

Ligaments are strong bands of tissue that connect bones and stabilise joints. Ligament injuries, such as sprains and tears, cause pain, swelling and sometimes instability.

Grades 1 to 3Sprains range from mild stretching to a complete tear.
Common sitesAnkle, knee (including the ACL) and wrist.
RehabilitationStrength and balance work reduces the chance of re-injury.

How Ligament develops

A twisting or impact injury can stretch or tear a ligament. Because ligaments have limited blood supply, healing can be slow, and severe tears may leave a joint unstable.

torn ligament
Ligaments hold bones together and keep joints stable. Sprains range from mild stretching to complete tears.

Common signs and symptoms

  • Pain and swelling around the joint
  • Bruising
  • A feeling of giving way
  • Difficulty putting weight on the joint
  • Reduced range of movement

Standard medical care

  • Protection, rest and gradual return to movement
  • Physiotherapy and bracing or taping
  • Strengthening and balance training
  • Surgery for some complete tears, such as ACL ruptures

Regenerative research

Researchers are investigating whether biological therapies may support ligament healing alongside rehabilitation. Evidence is still developing, and rehabilitation remains the foundation of treatment.

Evidence status: regenerative cell therapies for this condition are investigational. Results vary between people, and nothing on this page is a promise of benefit. Use them only after discussion with your own specialist.
